Growing up, we all find ourselves apart of a groups or communities of people in which we share similar hobbies or goals. Whether we this groups or communities are for school, fun, or work related purposes, they all generally create some sort of competition within the group that helps its members grow to be better at whatever that group or community was formed upon. For example, I have a group of friends in which we ride bikes (mountain bikes and box). The only reason we all know each other is because we all ride bikes, and the reason we continue to know each other is because we all push each others limits. Each individual in the group continues to get better at riding every time we ride because we are constantly encouraging and pushing each other to try new things. Aside from competition and constant progression, groups I have been apart of have been able to accomplish more because of the amount of minds put to a single task. It is easier to succeed in a group than by yourself. "Communities of Practice are groups of people who share a concern, a set of problems, or a passion about a topic, and who deepen their knowledge and expertise in this area by interacting on an ongoing basis." (Cultivating Communities of Practice, Chapter 1) Communities allow us to answer more questions and accomplish more. Here is a video briefly capturing the essence of the mountain biking community in Whistler.

  1. Your example of real world situations where we formulate groups was spot on. Growing up we tend to formulate groups based upon similar interests and we continue to grow as individuals based on the help of these peers and our ability to push one another to achieve common goals. I believe that groups are important growing up because as a child it is important to have people that are consistently there for you to push you to grow as an individual and to constantly motivate one another to never give up on any aspirations that you may have over the years. Great post!
