Majority of Reddit Users


As a person whom has never used reddit myself and do to plan on using, I found it interesting to hear that the majority of Reddit users are male. I believe that the video "The Culture of Reddit" states that about 71% of reddit users are male. Why would a website that is so large and based on human curiosity be mostly used by one gender, especially when the world consist of 51% women. The video then discusses it's user bases treatment of women online. According to the video, in many cases, a picture including a woman will turn into a seemingly slandering fest in which users (men) make extremely immature sexual jokes and statements that they would never say to a woman in real life. People whom then condemn these certain people making this atrocious comments are then given the argument that its free speech and that these people can say what they want. To me it seems like reddit is a double edged sword in which is an amazing platform for people to learn and interact from each other, yet its a place where people almost harass other women. Perhaps this is why mostly men use this platform, women just do not want to deal with the stupidity. It seems to me that many people use reddit as a informational tool and others use it purely for entertainment. I suppose that Reddit could try to enforce rules, but then it wouldn't be the open ended, casual website that it is today.

However, I was never really informed on how the website actually accumulated its information. I knew that anyone could edit it, but that was about it. On Tuesday in our collaboration class, I learned that Wikipedia actually has editors that go over new information added to the site and will decide if it is valid or not, edit it, or delete it. We also learned that in the pat Wikipedia team of editors was accused of being very one sided in terms of its scope that its information is written about. Youtube Online Communities

In our first week of ESOC 211, we discussed what a community is. The class came to an agreement that a community is a group of people that have something in common. A community of people generally shares common believes, interest, or has a common set of goals in mind. Ideally I would imagine that a community of people also communicate and contributes to whatever the cause may be of the community. Personally I feel that in order for something to be a community, there must be some sort of social interaction between the members of the community. This whole idea of a community then got me thinking what communities I happen to be a part of.
