Everyone Should Edit

Wikipedia has always been a source of information that I do not use for school work because it is simply not allowed, but as a source of learning on my own because of how accessible and generally accurate the website is. However, I was never really informed on how the website actually accumulated its information. I knew that anyone could edit it, but that was about it. On Tuesday in our collaboration class, I learned that Wikipedia actually has editors that go over new information added to the site and will decide if it is valid or not, edit it, or delete it. We also learned that in the pat Wikipedia team of editors was accused of being very one sided in terms of its scope that its information is written about. For example, Wikipedia was once under fire from the press for having a team of editors mostly made up of white men. Any information we read will always have influences and ways of looking at certain things that may be biased, no matter how hard the creator of that information tries to ignore his biases. The issue with Wikipedia having a team full of mostly white men, is that women, and other races scopes of looking at things are sort of ignored. Heres an example of how an informative Wikipedia post could get skewed unintentionally, I made this up by the way, say that a white man whom has never experienced racism decides to create the BLM Wikipedia page, this editor will write about what it is and give all the facts but perhaps they miss a few things that only someone whom the BLM movement really affects. The edit would read seemingly untrue and unfit to read by perhaps a black person. I'm not saying that a white man should not edit this page, but all races, and genders edit it to really capture a full picture of what BLM is. Wikipedia now has encouraged more people to edit for the website and that is a good thing. Here is a article about the gender bias of Wikipedia.
